Australia on brink of India series sweep

Australia were on the brink of a series sweep after reducing India to 166 for six in their pursuit of 500 runs for an unlikely victory at the close of play on the fourth day of the fourth Test on Friday.

The hosts declared at 167-5 shortly after lunch on another sweltering day at the Adelaide Oval which, added to their 604-7 declared, put them 499 runs ahead of India’s first attempt of 272.

Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Virat Kohli all crumbled once again before the Australian attack to leave the tourists 333 runs behind with a full day remaining.

Ishant Sharma, who came in as a nightwatchman and had scored two, and Wriddhiman Saha, who had yet to score, will resume on the final day of the match.

Nothing the Indians have done so far in the series had suggested they can overhaul their target, especially as the Test record for a successful fourth innings run chase is the 418 West Indies scored against Australia in Antigua in 2003.

That impression was compounded when a brilliant diving catch from Brad Haddin off the bowling of Ryan Harris triggered Gautam Gambhir’s departure for three with just 14 runs on the scoreboard.

Sehwag, replacing the banned Mahendra Singh Dhoni as skipper for this test, made deeper inroads into the target with some fine aggressive stroke-making in his 53-ball 62.

The 33-year-old’s contribution was undermined, however, by the manner of his dismissal, playing a schoolboy shot at a Nathan Lyon full toss and holing out to Ricky Ponting at cover.

That brought Tendulkar to the wicket for his 25th attempt to secure his 100th international century in a partnership of the two most prolific test batsmen of all time with Dravid.

Dravid lasted until after tea before departing for 25 when he drove at a Harris delivery and got a thick edge to Mike Hussey at gully – at least avoiding the ignominy of having been bowled for the seventh time in eight innings.

Tendulkar had made 13 off 34 balls when what is likely to be his last test innings in Australia came to an end when he defended a Lyon delivery, which caught his glove and pad and landed in Ed Cowan’s hands at short leg.

Laxman, who has had a miserable series, had already been dropped by Ponting on 25 when he hit a Lyon delivery straight to Shaun Marsh at midwicket to end what could be his last Test innings for 35.

Kohli, who had scored his first test century on Thursday, fell for 22, two overs from the end of the day when a direct hit from Ben Hilfenhaus ran him out.

Ponting had been at the crease on 60 not out with Brad Haddin (11 not out) when Australia captain Michael Clarke decided the lead was big enough and waved the batsmen in just three overs after lunch.

Resuming in the morning on 50-3 after losing their top order on Thursday, Clarke and Ponting, who both contributed double centuries in the first innings, combined for 71 runs.

Clarke was on 37 when he was beaten for pace by an Umesh Yadav delivery and there was enough of a noise to convince umpire Kumar Dharmasena that the Australian had got a nick before the ball went through to wicketkeeper Saha.

Ponting reached his 61st test half century soon afterwards with a single to the covers but Hussey angrily following his captain back to the dressing room when he was adjudged lbw off an Ishant Sharma delivery for 15.

Tendulkar fails to score 100 again

Indian cricket star Sachin Tendulkar yet again failed to score his elusive 100th international ton.

Sachin Tendulkar failed to score his elusive 100th international century in his what is likely his last test innings in Australia, being dismissed for 13 on Friday in India s second innings of the fourth test.

Tendulkar has now gone 22 innings without a Test century his longest spell without a Test hundred in his 188-Test career. He scored his last and 51st Test century against South Africa at Newsland, Cape Town in January 2011.

He was caught by Ed Cowan at short leg off the bowling of spinner Nathan Lyon, and was given a standing ovation on his way off the field. At age 38, it was very likely he will not play another Test in Australia.

Cement export price to Afghanistan raised

Pakistani exporters have raised cement prices for Afghanistan market from $ 37-40 per ton to $ 50 per ton, market sources said Thursday.

Cement exports to Afghanistan currently represent 50 percent of the total exports fromPakistan where major quantities are shipped by the companies having proximity to the north western border.

According to senior analyst of KASB Securities, Shagufta Irshad said that Pakistan has exported 4.7 million tons to Afghanistan during the year 2010-2011 and 2.5 million tons during the first half of 2011- 2012.

She said this increase would have a positive impact on the earnings of these companies in the current financial year and also enhance export earnings for the country.

Pakistani cement currently dominates in the central and north region of Afghanistan where major reconstruction activities are going on.

She pointed out that companies having exposure to Afghan market include Bestway, Cherat, Lafarge Cement, Fauji Cement and DG Khan Cement.

DGKC has higher exposure to Afghan market than Lucky as its both plants are located in the northern region.

She said that exports to Afghanistan currently contributes 30 percent of DGKC’s total exports compared 20-25 percent for Lucky Cement.

Shagufta noted that this increase will bring in a rise of 16 percent and 3 percent in the earnings for DGKC and Lucky respectively in FY12.

New-home purchases fall, 2011 worst ever for sales

Fewer Americans bought new homes in December. The decline made 2011 the worst year for new-home sales on records dating back nearly half a century.
The Commerce Department said Thursday new-home sales fell 2.2 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual pace of 307,000. The pace is less than half the 700,000 that economists say must be sold in a healthy economy.
About 302,000 new homes were sold last year. That’s less than the 323,000 sold in 2010, making last year’s sales the worst on records dating back to 1963. And it coincides with a report last week that said 2011 was the weakest year for single-family home construction on record.
The median sales prices for new homes dropped in December to $210,300. Builders continued to slash price to stay competitive in the depressed market.
Still, sales of new homes rose in the final quarter of 2011, supporting other signs of a slow turnaround that began at the end of the year.
Sales of previously occupied homes rose in December for a third straight month. Mortgage rates have never been lower. Homebuilders are slightly more hopeful because more people are saying they might consider buying this year. And home construction picked up in the final quarter of last year.
“Although this decline was unexpected, it does not change the story that housing has likely bottomed,” said Jennifer H. Lee, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets.

Euro under pressure amid Greek talks

Broader market attention is shifting back to the ongoing Greek debt talks.

The euro remained under pressure in Asia on Friday as market players awaited developments in Greece s talks on a debt writedown.

The single currency fetched $1.3103 in Tokyo afternoon trade, flat from New York late Thursday, while easing to 100.81 yen from 101.48.

The dollar fell to 76.92 yen from 77.40 yen as short-term speculators triggered stop-loss selling orders around 77.25 yen, a dealer at a major Japanese investment bank said.

The dollar trended lower after the Federal Reserve s pledge to maintain low interest rates for a prolonged period, the dealer told Dow Jones Newswires.

Broader market attention was shifting back to the ongoing Greek debt talks, said Sumino Kamei, senior analyst at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ.

The focus will be on a European Union summit meeting in Brussels on Monday and whether or not any progress will be made by then, she said.

“With uncertainty over the future of the European sovereign debt crisis, the euro will continue to fall,” she said.

Greece resumed talks Thursday with banks and insurers on a deal for a major debt writedown to escape looming default.

Prime Minister Lucas Papademos and Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos met the private creditors  lead negotiators, Charles Dallara and Jean Lemierre, with the talks due to resume again on Friday.

The private creditors said in a statement that “some progress was realised” in Thursday s discussions.

The dollar mostly firmed against other Asian currencies.

It edged up to 31.29 Thai baht from 31.23 baht Thursday, to Sg$1.2573 from Sg$1.2562, to 42.84 Philippine pesos from 42.81 pesos, to 1,123.30 South Korean won from 1,121.00 won, and to 8,965.00 Indonesian rupiah from 8,960.00 rupiah.

The dollar held steady at Tw$29.89.

UN Council to discuss Syria today

The UN Security Council will discuss the Syria crisis Friday, and western and Arab nations could make public their draft resolution condemning the government’s deadly crackdown, diplomats said.

The unexpected meeting was announced by French diplomats after representatives of the council’s five permanent members — Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States — held talks Thursday on the new resolution.

Friday’s consultations were called by Morocco, the current Arab member of the 15-nation body, which has been unable to agree a resolution on Syria since the protests erupted last March.

“A draft resolution could be sent to all members of the council tomorrow,” one Security Council diplomat said.

A new resolution giving strong backing to the Arab League’s initiative to end the Syria crisis has been drawn up by Britain, France, Germany and Arab nations, including Morocco and Qatar.

The draft’s supporters hope for a vote next week. Arab League secretary general Nabil al-Arabi and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim Al-Thani are to brief the council on Syria on Monday or Tuesday.

The Arab League has called on President Bashar al-Assad to hand over powers to a deputy so that elections can be held in Syria where the UN says more than 5,400 people have died.

Russia and China used their veto powers as permanent members of the council to block one European resolution in October.

Russia has since proposed its own resolution but there have hardly been any negotiations on the bid which Western countries have called unbalanced.

“This would be the response of a number of countries to the Russian resolution and the veto in October,” added a western diplomat, referring to Friday’s meeting and the new draft.

The draft resolution, obtained by AFP, “condemns the continued widespread and gross violations of human rights” and makes a new call for an immediate halt to the government crackdown.

If the current draft is agreed, the council would say it “fully supports” the Arab League plan of January 22 which calls on Assad to hand over powers “to facilitate a political transition leading to a democratic, plural political system.”

The draft resolution hints at sanctions which could be opposed by Russia and China.

The resolution “takes note” of Arab League economic sanctions ordered on November 27 and “encourages all states to adopt similar steps and fully to cooperate with the League of Arab States in the implementation of its measures.”

Russia and China vetoed the last European resolution because they said it was part of a regime change campaign by the West. They have said they oppose any hint of sanctions.
